This weekend I went with some friends to Musanze and Gisenyi... places in northwest Rwanda.
Here's a quick list of how the weekend went...
- Bus to Musanze, 2.5 hours, closed windows (Rwandans don't like cold air), ~$3.00
- Check into our guest house for the night. 2 beds, mosquito nets and lumpy pillows ~$9.00 including breakfast the next morning
- Our friend Jon had to exchange money so we asked the locals for directions. There is a man in the pharmacy who can change your money, they told us. We thought they meant NEAR the pharmacy. NOPE! Right in the pharmacy, the pharmacist took his American Dollars and gave him a good rate for Rwandan Francs. Awesome.
- We were looking for a restaurant that Douglas had been to before. We asked for directions and people kept telling us how much farther (10 meters, 500 meters, 100 meters... in that order.)
- Finally we saw a sign for "PIZZA" and gave up on the other place! We were so glad that we did. This place was completely empty and there was a FIREPLACE!! It was perfect for a rainy evening with pizza and fanta!
- In the morning we went to the market, looked around for a bit then headed to the bus station. The next bus left in 5 minutes, so 35 minutes later we hopped on a bus headed to Gusinyi.
- We checked into the Presbyterian Guest House which cost each of us less than $3.50 for the night. We got everything we needed: bunk, sheets, and mosquito net. Pillow? No. No pillow.
- Douglas got food poisoning, it hit him about 3am, and the toilet had no toilet seat.
- In the morning we ate the cheap breakfast, and went back to the nice hotel, and eventually headed home!
